Global Youth Service Day for us this year was also Earth Day and it was an amazing time spent in nature for our Youth Volunteers.
The beauty of the day was in the spark of light that shone in their eyes when they learned they would be spending their day around the animals. The nature center was filled with sheep, donkeys, prairie dogs, pigs, chickens, armadillos and so much more.
As our Youth Volunteers basked in the sheer joy and wonder of being around those animals, as Team Leaders we couldn't help but sit back in gratitude at being able to spend our Earth day with some of nature's finest wonders. Rolling hills of lush green grass, small ponds and beautiful hiking trails made for an incredible scenery.
Despite the rain that was intended to put a damper on the day, our Youth Volunteers took it all in stride to commemorate how beautiful the Earth is. We watched as jubilant children played in the mud piles in preparation for the 5k race as the rain showered down on us.
As I looked on with droplets of water cascading down my face, one of our YVCers simply turned to me and said, "This is what being one with nature is all about. YVC is awesome." In that moment, I was reminded of one very important thing..."Wherever you go, no matter what the weather, always bring your own sunshine." -Anthony J. D'Angelo
